The lens is billed by its maker, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care as the next generation of contact lens due to the material it is made from.
The Advance with Hydraclear lens material is galyfilcon A and has an internal wetting agent. This gives the lens a 47 per cent water content but it also has the high oxygen transmissibility of silicone hydrogel materials.
This mix of qualities also provided a less rigid lens and one with a soft lubricious feel said J&J. This led to fewer problems caused by mechanical interaction and more comfort. The wearer also maintained whiter eyes because of the greater oxygen transmissibility, claimed J&J.
In a break with other silicone hydrogel products Acuvue Advance is being promoted as a daily wear lens and not for use on an extended wear basis.
