The daily wear Advance lens contains an internal wetting agent called Hydraclear. The lens is made of a material that J&J claims combines the hydrophilic qualities of a traditional hydrogel and the high oxygen transmissibility of a silicone hydrogel.
The result is a smoother lens surface, less friction and a more comfortable lens, says J&J.
Director of professional affairs John Myler said the new lens would offer eye care professionals an important new option for patients dissatisfied with current daily wear frequent replacement lenses and those who have stopped wearing contact lenses for comfort reasons.
'Hydraclear allows Acuvue Advance to retain the hydrophilic nature of a regular hydrogel, while countering the hydrophobic nature of silicone,' said Myler. 'They have a product that provides three times more oxygen than the leading hydrogel contact lens brand, helping keep the eyes comfortable, white and healthy.'
J&J is also expected to announce an extended wear silicone hydrogel product in 2004.
