The company is hoping to start human trials in September with a roll out in early 2021

Johnson & Johnson has announced that it has been working on a vaccine for coronavirus (Covid-19) since January that could be available for emergency use by early 2021.

The company expects to initiate the first phase of human clinical studies of its vaccine by September 2020, which will then be submitted to regulators.

Alex Gorsky, chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, said: ‘The world is facing an urgent public health crisis and we are committed to doing our part to make a Covid-19 vaccine available and affordable globally as quickly as possible.’

Johnson & Johnson explained that it has rapidly scaled its manufacturing capacity and committed $1bn for research, development and testing with the aim of providing more than one billion doses of the vaccine globally.
