It said that the lens was an innovation in vision care, providing 'astigmatic patients with excellent visual acuity and exceptional long-lasting comfort leading to greater patient satisfaction with faster easier fittings'.

Ex-England rugby star and director of rugby at Newcastle Falcons Rob Andrew was fitted with the lens by his eye care professional Malcolm Long.

'The lens settled quickly and easily and felt very comfortable,' said Andrew after the fitting. 'In a fast-paced sport such as rugby, vision plays an essential role and it is all too easy for players to lose lenses on the field. It is great that there is now a lens better suited to sports players who suffer from astigmatism.'

Featuring 'accelerated stabilisation design', Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism 'establishes a new level of stability' enabling professionals to go from 'zero to fitting in 60 seconds', said J&J.

The lens will be available nationally from April 3.
