Premium optics manufacturer Leica Camera AG has entered the ophthalmic lens market through a partnership with French lens producer Novacel.
Products in the new Leica Eyecare brand have been developed in collaboration with Novacel and will be produced at the company’s facility in France on a purpose-built production line.
The company said the optical precision of its photographic and sport optics would be reflected in the new lens collection. As such, Leica said the portfolio was the first to offer powers in steps of 0.125D while maintaining manufacturing tolerances of ± 0.10D.
Leica’s AquaDura coating, used for many years on the company’s binoculars, will also be used and has been backed with an ‘unusually attractive’ surface damage and scratch warranty with interim back-up service.
The lenses will initially be launched in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland, with additional countries planned for 2018.
