Money from NHS eye tests could go towards funding a support unit for local optometric committees under plans unveiled by ABDO, the AOP and FODO.
Speaking at the National Optometric Conference, Association of Optometrists chief executive Bob Hughes said the unit would provide training and support to LOCs negotiating new levels of optical service provision with primary care trusts.
'Essentially this unit will help the LOCs punch their weight when it comes to negotiations at the local level,' he said. 'At present, LOCs do not have enough skills or back-up to face down the arguments against moving eye care into primary care settings. This unit will help ensure that LOCs are no longer ignored, and that we can make the advances in eye care provision that are being made in Scotland and Wales.'
