A new enterprise, co-founded by two optical profession stalwarts, launches today (February 25). The company, Primary Health Net (PHN), is offering ready-made website solutions to LOCs, and other primary care professionals.
It has been established by former College of Optometrists head of training and CPD Charles Greenwood, and Bob Hutchinson, known for his many years of consultancy work in the profession.
The venture aims to help LOCs communicate with PCTs and the wider health community, as well as their own members. 'LOCs are no different to other primary care communities,' said Hutchinson, 'often over-laden with work borne by a dedicated few.
'With this in mind the ability to provide a ready-made solution which can easily be branded and tailored to local requirements is provided from today.'
For a fee the company said it could help LOCs react quickly to clinical and legislative changes, liaise effectively with PCTs, represent and provide services for members, and 'communicate with all stakeholders'.
Aside from the familiar internet formats - electronic discussion forums, noticeboards and contact detail lists <2212> PHN will allow minutes, agendas and local protocols to be included, and also can post details to other publicly available lists of primary care resources.
'There is a range of user requirements among LOCs, with some already ahead with plans for member interaction, CPD, and peer review,' he said.
'However, others are at an early stage of development and need a simplified website initially to raise their profile and the interaction of their members.'
PHN has three levels - Starter, Intermediate and Complete - so LOCs can in time develop their information resource.
As well as practical benefits, members of each website would, claimed Hutchinson, be able to share ideas with a nationwide audience of optometrists or choose to communicate with GPs, dentists and pharmacists.
Greenwood, the other director in the company, said: 'The ability to share problems and already agreed solutions will enhance the primary sector and reduce the inevitable post code lottery in healthcare protocols which have divided professionals and professions in the past.'
The company's individual websites, branded and supplied with local content by LOCs, start at £495 and cost from £10 per month maintenance and hosting.
