Luxottica has urged practices to be on their guard after its stockists were targeted in a credit card fraud scam.
The company said practices had received calls enquiring as to availability and cost of around a dozen designer frames needed as gifts for an imminent wedding. The caller pays for the frames over the phone using fraudulent credit card details and sends a taxi to collect them.
The credit card transaction usually receives an authorisation as the legitimate owner of the card is unaware it is being used fraudulently. Only when the legitimate card holder receives a statement is the transaction queried.
