Million mark at Hoya plant

Hoya Lens UK has celebrated the first anniversary of its mass-production plant in Wrexham, North Wales, by presenting the one millionth lens made at the unit to Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales Peter Hain.

The lens was mounted on a specially hand-crafted base and received on behalf of the MP by Hoya managing director Annesley Wright. The new &\#163;10m plant, opened in October 1997 by Mr Hain, was built alongside Hoya's 18-year-old prescription factory, doubling the workforce on the site to more than 300 and making Wrexham the company's single largest manufacturing unit in Europe. Demand for mass-produced lenses from the new unit is already claimed to outstrip supply. 'The level of success achieved by our new manufacturing team can be credited to customer focus, commitment to quality systems and procedures, and the team approach,' says Mr Wright.
