Moneo's column last week has re-ignited the debate over whether or not pupillary distance measurements should be made available to patients.
Jennifer Brower, an ABDO board member, said she was moved to respond in a personal capacity to Moneo, as the whole issue of PDs was one of the most frequently asked questions by ABDO members.
She said: 'The PD measurement is a professional opinion and by giving this information to the patient I believe you take a certain amount of responsibility for accurate and suitable dispensing of the prescription. The PD of course is simply one dispensing measurement of many and does not take into account: monocular PDs, vertical PDs and OCs, adjustment of OC heights for aspheric lenses and pantoscopic tilt.'
