Moorfields Eye Hospital’s Oriel project receives green light

Project Oriel has been approved by 14 CCGs

A proposal to relocate Moorfields Eye Hospital from its current City Road home to King’s Cross has been approved by 14 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG).

The relocation, named Project Oriel, now moves into the next stage of planning to build an eye care and research centre in central London.

Oriel will mean that Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity live under one roof at an integrated facility on the St Pancras Hospital site in Camden.

David Probert, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital, said: ‘This decision is a significant step forward in our journey towards creating a new integrated eye care, research and education facility. We know that our clinicians provide modern, efficient and effective treatment despite the limitations of our century-old City Road site but this new centre will allow us to work much more closely with research colleagues to develop further treatments for our patients.’
