Researchers are exploring the potential of Organic Light Emitting Devices (OLEDs) to treat eye conditions.

Sedgefield-based technology firm PolyPhotonix, which for the past six years has been developing sleep masks for the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy at the National Printable Electronics Centre, has teamed up with Moorfields. Their research programme was testing the ways OLED technology could be used to treat disorders of the eye and eye disease for patients with a range of conditions.

‘The links between PPX and Moorfields are an important example of how high quality research can be translated into potential therapies and treatments for patients,’ a Moorfields spokesperson said.
