A latest moot evening held by The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers has discussed the direction the internet will take the optical profession.
The debate on the internet, entitled ‘How it does and how it may in future affect our lives’, addressed the power of social media and consumer expectations.
Panellist Andy Chance-Hill, opticommerce director at optical software solutions company Ocuco, said service providers who did not have an online relationship with their customers would lose out in the long run.
The challenge of illegal practice and the internet was also addressed.
Following the meeting, GOC chair Gareth Hadley said: ‘The GOC, as regulator, has an interest in this and can help facilitate change by ensuring that standards, guidance and scopes of practice facilitate registrants rising to the challenge, but leadership has to come from within the professions themselves.
