A beneficiary recruitment drive by Optician Awards charity partner Blind Veterans UK has received high level backing from political and NHS figures.

The national military charity held a special parliamentary reception, co-hosted by MPs Simon Kirby, Gemma Doyle and Martin Horwood, to raise awareness of the organisation’s No One Alone campaign, which estimated that there were some 68,000 veterans in the UK with vision impairment not aware that there was free support available to them.

Over 30 MPs, including Dr Daniel Poulter, parliamentary under-secretary of state for health and shadow chancellor of the exchequer Ed Balls attended the event.

‘The work Blind Veterans UK does is vital in supporting veterans in my constituency and right across the UK. No veteran experiencing severe sight loss should have to battle blindness alone. The charity provides some really vital services and I am delighted to pledge my support,’ said Balls.
