Glasses Direct founder Jamie Murray Wells has accused the optical profession of confusing patients with complicated terminology and a lack of transparency.
'For years, the UK optical industry has benefited from using unnecessarily confusing language and a lack of transparency about added extras that most people don't need, don't understand and cannot afford. We felt it's time to expose what's going on,' he said.
The entrepreneur's comments came after a survey of 1,000 spectacle wearers, commissioned by Glasses Direct, revealed that 85 per cent of those questioned did not understand their prescription.
The report also suggested there was a lack of understanding of common terms on a prescription and with spectacles in general.
