NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is supporting a new training and qualification programme for optical assistants working in GOS-registered practices in Scotland.

The 'WCSM Certificate in Optical Care' qualification for optical screening and care has been approved by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and will be awarded by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. The preparatory training, conducted under the WCSM Education Trust, is being funded by NES, as part of an initiative that recognises the benefit of a more formal structure to the training of optical assistants. Starting this month, and with an exam in March 2011, the training covers hands-on experience of up-to-date screening equipment and background knowledge to support professional members of the practice team.

Each student will be allocated a distance-learning tutor and can attend three one-day workshops run by professionally qualified staff.
