Latest figures have shown the number of people with visual impairment in Wales has fallen over the last five years – as the Welsh government offered new funding to eye care providers.

The number of people certified as having a visual impairment in Wales had fallen every year for the last five years, a government statement said. This represented a reduction from 1,737 patients in 2009 to 1,362 last year.

It followed investment in new services including Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service Wales (DRSSW) and efforts to make treatments for wet AMD widely available. Last year £16m was made available for around 16,000 courses of AMD treatment and £500,000 had been invested in digital cameras for the DRSSW service.
