New test chart letters and room illumination standards for optical practices are due to come into force in the UK from 2023.
A consultation has been launched by the Consumer Complaint Service (CCS). The CCS had a total of 11 complaints regarding the threatening sensation and high levels of anxiety caused by visits to opticians for eye tests.
All 11 complainers felt that although they had a thorough eye examination, the overall experience was negative.
Two factors were identified: test room illumination and test chart dyslexia. Both will be addressed during the current revision of the British Standards that apply to optical testing equipment.
