A ready-reader trial conducted for The Daily Mail (January 4) revealed a number of potential problems with buying corrective eyewear over the counter.
Frames in the survey, which were priced from £1 to £18.99, were reviewed by Optical Express, which does not stock ready-readers, and were scored from one to 10. Sample frames included examples from Sightstation.com, Boots, Poundland, Tiger, TK Maxx, Primark and Marks & Spencer.
The worst performing pair, with a score of one out of 10, was Essential Style priced at £1 by Poundland (+3.5). They were described as 'a classic example of what not to buy. The optical centres should be around 62mm from each side of the lens - these are 71mm on one side, so are suitable only for someone with really, really wide-set eyes.' The lenses were pitted and the nickel frame, which could cause allergies, was slightly out of shape.
