Hundreds of people who live in the Plymouth area were to benefit from Swiss multinational Novartis Pharmaceutical’s working partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust to establish a new Macular Treatment Centre (MTC).

The decision to construct the new MTC in Frimley, Plymouth, was made this week after a patient satisfaction survey at the Royal Eye Infirmary (REI), based in Plymouth, highlighted that a lack of resources was preventing the local hospitals from producing timely reviews and adequate treatments for serious eye conditions in the community.

Specifically, the patient-led changes will see patients benefit from two innovative pieces of equipment: an angiography camera and an OCT machine. The unit now has more nursing staff and optometrist-led clinics have been introduced.
