Optometrist Alexandra Miller, 45, from West Bridgford, Nottingham was killed in a road accident on October 12.

Known to her friends as Sacha, she was born in Argentina, but grew up in Sutton Coldfield before graduating in optometry from City University in 1986.

Doing her pre-registration training at St Mary's Hospital Colchester, Miller began working part-time in Nottingham University Hospitals as well as working in several community optometry practices.

Described by former colleague Professor Martin Rubinstein of Nottingham University Hospitals as 'a highly skilled, enthusiastic, popular and well respected clinician with particular interests in contact lenses and paediatrics', she assisted in the supervision of over 40 pre-registration optometrists, becoming known as 'Aunty Sacha'.

A keen horse rider and adventure sports enthusiast, she had travelled the world, including Cambodia, Cuba, Peru and New Zealand.

Professor Rubinstein described Miller as 'a most cultured, sensitive and humane individual who had an infectious enthusiasm for life', saying that she would be sadly missed 'but all our lives are richer for having known her'. He added that the loss had deprived the East Midlands' ophthalmic community of 'one of its most able and colourful members' and gave his condolences to her parents and two brothers.
