Optometrist ME Maguire died on September 30 after a career in optometry spanning over 70 years.

Born on November 24 1906, Maguire worked for Fleming Brothers Opticians from the age of 14 before completing his education and qualifying as an optometrist.

He worked for PC Hirst from 1937 until 1938; Wright and Mills from September 1941 until March 1945 and Clement Clarke as manager of its Watford branch from 1945-1948.

Maguire started his own practice in Watford with business partner R Stewart-Dick, which he continued to run until his retirement at age 63.

However, he continued locum work until the impressive age of 87 at Robert Roope’s St Albans practice, before being forced into permanent retirement by a dislocated shoulder.

‘This must very nearly be a record!’ commented optometrist J B Richards, who submitted these details.
