Previous BCLA president John Menon dies

Previous British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) president John Menon died peacefully in his sleep on December 10.

An association spokesperson said he had suffered a number of strokes in recent years and had macular degeneration.

Menon served as BCLA president from 1982-83 and was awarded Honorary BCLA membership in recognition of his commitment to the organisation over many years.

He is also the author of a number of papers on contact lenses, in particular on the promotion of monovision prior to the modern presbyopic designs being widely available.

After qualifying from St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1949, Menon served as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was appointed Divisional Medical Officer in a number of towns in Malaysia and then went on to spend three years with the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company.

Menon returned to London as a GP and hospital practitioner at Barnet General Hospital before joining Moorfields contact lens department in 1973 as a research fellow.

In 1986, he retired from practice to take up sheep farming.

BCLA CEO Cheryl Donnelly said: ‘John was a hard working professional throughout his career and was passionate about the advancement of contact lenses. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.’
