Optometrist Peter Brogan of Northern Ireland died on January 1 aged 57 from cancer of the oesophagus.
Graduating from City University in London in the early 1970s and achieving a specialist contact lens qualification, he worked for David Clulow in Earl' s Court and then in Bristol. In 1979 he returned to Northern Ireland to take over the practice of his father, Paddy, also an optometrist, in Lisburn, County Antrim, building up the successful business.
As well as becoming president of the Northern Ireland Optometric Society, Brogan was Northern Ireland's representative on the General Optical Council and a director of Watt Optical prescription house.
Outside of optics, Brogan's achievements included being a justice of the peace and becoming president of Lisburn Rotary Club.
A talented sportsman, Brogan won numerous optical golfing events across the UK and Ireland and was describedby Belfast optometrist Ronnie Glass as having a lovely sense of humour, which was enjoyed by his friends.
Writing to Optician, Glass said: 'It is particularly sad when someone like Peter - so full of life and with so much to live for - dies before his time.'
Brogan is survived by his wife Ethna and two children Roisin and Andrew.
