OCT machine discovers macular hole

An OCT machine reveals a hole in a patient’s macular

An optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine revealed a hole in a patient’s macular.

Phillip Wright was on holiday in Spain when he realised he couldn’t see properly out of his left eye. The 70 year old then had an eye examination at his local Specsavers, where the discovery was made. Two weeks later, Wright had received surgery to fix the hole, which would have resulted in him losing his sight if it had remained unnoticed.

His optometrist said: ‘We have an OCT machine in-store, and what the image showed was that Phillip had a macular hole in his left eye, which was extremely concerning. I immediately referred Phillip to Moorfields Eye Hospital because this sort of condition requires fast action.’
