Optometrist Barry Curran has been operating out of temporary accommodation since terrorists detonated a car bomb on August 15, 1998. The bomb, which destroyed his practice and most of Market Street, left 29 people dead and injured more than 200. By chance, the practice was closed that day because the staff were at the wedding of dispensing assistant Lisa Neil. Mr Curran said business was not affected and his patients remained 'very loyal' after the tragedy. The third generation practice has 20,000 people on its database. He commissioned the Gloucester-based Style Design Company to redesign the interior. Mr Curran said that the reconstruction was 'out of the insurers' hands' because it was an act of terrorism, but he was partially compensated for the loss. 'I wanted the interior to reflect a bright new future,' said Mr Curran. 'A lot of people here want to get on and get their lives back to normality.'
