A locum optometrist who failed to alert a patient to the possibility of a detached retina at the Burton-on-Trent branch of Specsavers was this week given the go-ahead to resume unrestricted practice.
The conditions were imposed on Neil Carter by the GOC following a hearing in February this year (News, March 2). The hearing was told that Carter informed the patient there was 'nothing wrong', but after further checks the detached retina was diagnosed by another optometrist.
Carter was told to make three attendances at a hospital eye department and to attend a university optometry department for a minimum of three two-hour sessions of one-to-one tuition including slit-lamp examinations.
