Independent optometrist Deven Lakhani, who runs Hammonds Opticians in London, recently sponsored an eye project in rural India.
An ophthalmologist and two assistants supplied free spectacles and medication for 300 people from Chhaiya in Gujarat, where 40,000 have no access to optical care. Lakhani said: 'The clinic resembled Bedlam at times, with some people showing signs of anxiety. The majority, however, were very good natured and content to wait.'
