A Leeds-based optometrist is campaigning to increase patient awareness about the importance of eye care, following a survey revealing that 22 per cent of people in Yorkshire and Humber put up with headaches linked to poor vision rather than visiting an optician.

Speaking at the launch of National Eye Health Week (June 14-20), Royston Bayfield, managing director of the Bayfield & Bartlam Ophthalmic Group, said: 'There's been a nationwide drive to make people more aware of their eyes. We only have one pair of eyes and if we let them degenerate there's no going back.'

The survey of 3,000 people was commissioned by Sight Care initiative www.eyelovelocal.co.uk.
