A blind man who has suffered from crippling headaches for 30 years has been cured by an optometrist.
Albert Lynn, who has been registered blind for 55 years, was taking nine tablets a day to control the pain stumbled across his cure when he took his wife to the opticians.
Dominic Hartley, optometrist at Specsavers Opticians in Girlington, West Yorkshire, heard that Lynn had found wearing a pair of sunglasses had eased the pain slightly.
'This triggered some alarm bells,' said Hartley, 'and I suggested that, even though he was blind, he should be examined to check the health of his eyes.'
During the consultation Hartley discovered that a nerve in Lynn's right eye was still responding to changes in levels of light, and afterwards was fitted for a pair of sunglasses with a prescription tint to help filter the amount of light reaching the nerve end.
'I couldn't believe it when Dominic explained what was wrong,' Lynn said. 'I have been blind for so long, the thought of going for a sight test seemed ridiculous.'
Within 48 hours of wearing the glasses he stopped taking his medication for his headaches, and has not taken any since.
