Optometrist David Clegg's fitness to practise was found not to be impaired at a General Optical Council hearing this month and he was not given any formal warning in relation to future conduct.

The committee found that inadequacies were demonstrated over a series of core competencies across a series of patients, specifically failures in taking history and symptoms in a rigorous and professional manner and the conduct of certain tests in a cursory or incomplete manner. It added: 'When challenged on individual matters, the registrant demonstrated a lack of insight which suggested he failed to appreciate the possible consequences of his behaviour.' It concluded that his behaviour amounted to deficient professional performance.
