Open your eyes to Olympic opportunity

We have had a wonderful response to our call for volunteers for the Special Olympics Summer Games in Cardiff. In addition to the UK volunteers, there are optometrists arriving from the US, Spain, Hungary and Ghana, and during this vision screening Opening Eyes UK will also be hosting a training programme for European clinical directors of Opening Eyes.

The first screening session has over 115 optometrists and students and is therefore full. We still need another 30 plus volunteers for the second screening session (July 31-August 2) and would be grateful for optometrists with experience of supervising students. There are only a few vacancies left for student volunteers and priority will be given to pre-registration and third-year students. We have had excellent sponsorship already from the optical industry, but in order to raise some funds we are holding a draw and the first prize is a trip to Paris for two. Tickets will be sold at Optrafair (April 21-23). Opening Eyes UK will have a small display on the College of Optometrists' stand at the show and we hope many practitioners will show support by buying a ticket.
