optician extends CET to dispensing opticians

From April 2 optician will be extending its contact lens continuing education and training (CET) course in Problem-solving in Contact Lens Practice to dispensing opticians.

The move will allow an extra 1,200 dispensing opticians to take part in a formal CET programme. The project, which is already approved by the College of Optometrists, has also gained the approval of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO). Duncan Counter, chairman of ABDO's communication and training committee, said: 'In today's constantly changing optical world CET is the only way the modern practitioner can keep up to date. It is something that should be carried out willingly as part of the professional responsibility and as such should be easily accessible. 'The initiative between optician and ABDO is a great shot in the arm for dispensing opticians as ABDO begins to move towards a system of official accreditation of CET, and also as contact lens CET falls under the spotlight.' The extension of this CET series is the first in a number of moves by optician to promote CET among dispensing opticians. Dr Sandip Doshi, optician's clinical editor, said: 'We are also formulating a number of new projects that will appeal to non-contact lens fitting dispensing opticians. 'We are delighted to be working with ABDO. CET is crucial for the optical profession and we have an ideal format for busy practitioners who may not have the time to attend courses or local optical association meetings.'
