Optometry researchers and students have been invited to apply for a research grant by the College of Optometrists. Grants include postgraduate scholarships leading to a PhD, and summer projects. The College has also introduced a new category of Clinical Research Fellowships for post-doctoral researchers in hospitals. College director of research Mike Bowen said: 'We are pleased to be able to continue to support all levels of research and encourage anyone interested in applying for a grant to contact us.' Software developed by Royal Holloway University has been designed to help sufferers of macular degeneration read more effectively. Using a single line of continuously scrolling text, an app encourages patients to use their peripheral vision to read instead of the affected centre of vision. Professor Robin Walker, from the university's psychology department, said: 'Volunteers who have been involved in testing the app have largely reported that the experience of reading was greatly improved with this system.'
