Researchers have found there are currently no published randomised clinical trials (RCTs) investigating the use of increasing dietary omega 3 in preventing or treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A review published by The Cochrane Library set out to review evidence from RCTs but found no trials met its selection criteria. The review added that data from a large, ongoing, multi-centre trial based in the US, AREDS2, would soon be available. Two further trials were also ongoing.

LOCSU has announced the appointment of Poonam Sharma as an optical lead. Sharma has worked in the NHS for eight years as an optometric advisor for East London and is also currently studying for a Masters degree in Public Health. Katrina Venerus, managing director of LOCSU, said: 'Poonam's appointment means that we now have six optical leads who can support Local Optical Committees across England in negotiating and implementing primary care services at a local level.'
