Optometrist turned military historian Peter Garwood has made an appearance on an episode of BBC series How We Won the War. The Monmouth practitioner explained the use of barrage balloons to defend Britain's skies from enemy bombers. During the episode, which focused on Wales, Garwood told presenter Jules Hudson how the balloons were positioned to protect Cardiff Dock. He has also carried out research for another programme planned for the spring.
Scientists at Cardiff University have been awarded a £1.75m grant from the Medical Research Council to support research into the structure of the cornea. Professor Keith Meek, from the University's School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, said: 'The knowledge that we will obtain by clarifying the exact relationship between the structure of the cornea and the function, will allow us to collaborate with international groups to drive their constructs more quickly towards a fully functioning artificial cornea.'
