Europe's largest optical franchisor Alain Afflelou is to be acquired by international consumer sector investor Lion Capital. The deal is expected to be completed by June 2012 after it has been approved by the European Competition Authorities. Javier Ferrán, partner of Lion Capital, said: 'Alain Afflelou has established an enviable position within the optical retail industry in Europe by consistent communication to the consumer of innovative product solutions and attractive and creative promotional offerings.'
Keith Barton, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, has been elected chairman of The International Glaucoma Association (IGA). Barton's research interests include the surgical management of glaucoma, specifically secondary glaucomas and the use of aqueous shunt devices. On his new role, he said: 'My contribution as chairman will be to raise awareness of the IGA both in ophthalmic circles nationally and internationally, but more importantly with the public.'
