A GOC fitness to practise hearing has found that Azzam Shweiki’s fitness to practise was not impaired by reason of misconduct after he admitted to sexual activity when his practice was closed.
The optometrist attended a hearing after the GOC received a complaint alleging he had engaged in consensual sexual activity with a woman when working late at the practice he owned, which he admitted.
It was heard how, in July 2016, Shweiki was working late and closing down his practice when a lady walked past and their eyes met.
‘He said hello and she smiled and walked past. She then stopped and went back to him. They flirted with each other and continued to flirt when they moved inside the practice. They went into the examination room of the practice and engaged in consensual sexual activity,’ it was stated.
The committee members found that there had not been a departure from the standards expected of a registrant regarding proper professional boundaries due to it taking place after working hours and on the business premises he managed.
