​Lincoln optometrist crowned national 400m grass track cycling champion

Lincoln optometrist Dr Martin Smith has become the national 400m grass track cycling champion after beating all comers at the grass championships in Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Grass track uses similar bikes to hard track racing and is a sport Dr Smith has taken part in since the age of 15 rising to represent England at the six nations championships.

Some grass track meets have been going for over 100 years and have been the breeding grounds for champions such as Jason Kenny, Laura Trott and Victoria Pendleton. ‘It’s more technical than hard track racing as you have to be able to get round often slippery corners at speed,’ he said.
