Optometrist is to give up his two week summer holiday later this month to volunteer in Zambia with Vision Aid Overseas

Newcastle OO Michael Offord is to give up his two week summer holiday later this month to volunteer in Zambia with Vision Aid Overseas.

Offord will be part of a team of six optometrists, opticians and support staff from practices across the UK. It is the 15th consecutive year he has volunteered abroad with the charity.

Commenting on the assignment, he said: ‘It is really satisfying to transfer my skills and really make a difference to people’s lives. It's an emotional rollercoaster as, unlike many of our patients back in the UK we see people at the end stages of Cataracts and Glaucoma which can be very distressing.’
