Optometrist Umesh Popat's conditions are revoked

Optometrist Umesh Popat has had his 18-month conditional registration order revoked by a General Optical Council fitness to practise committee.

Popat was placed on conditional registration in September 2012 after a committee raised concerns over his ability to assess and manage patients at risk of glaucoma.

At last week’s third review hearing the committee said Popat had embraced the fitness to practise process, showed insight and made considerable efforts to improve his practice and knowledge.

Participation in relevant CET, shadowing a glaucoma specialist, redesigned record cards and the purchase of new equipment were some of the measures said to have been used by the registrant.
