Optometrist warned

An optometrist alleged to have made clinical and record-keeping errors while treating a child has been given a three-year warning by a GOC fitness to practise committee.

On two occasions in 2008 and 2009 while working at Dollond & Aitchison, Annette Owen was alleged to have failed to carry out and record the results of retinoscopy and ocular motor balance tests. It was also alleged that her records were inadequate and illegible and that on the second occasion, an inaccurate Rx was issued for the right eye.

Owen admitted to the allegations of illegible record-keeping but denied failing to carry out retinoscopy and ocular motor balance tests. She asserted that the tests were carried out habitually and that she only recorded abnormal results.
