In a series of courses funded by NHS Education for Scotland (NES), optometrists are being taught communication techniques such as how to give bad news to patients.

Glasgow Caledonian University's department of Vision Sciences will teach communication and enhanced examination techniques to optometrists, beginning this month at Ayr Hospital.

The courses will also cover communicating effectively with people suffering from various learning difficulties. The series of 19 tutorials and workshops from April 2010 to March 2011 is part of a drive by a Scottish government health directorate to support optometrists working for the NHS in Scotland.

Dr Nadia Northway, a lecturer at GCU, said: 'Glasgow Caledonian University is the only university in Scotland to teach optometry and as such has worked with NES on several occasions to develop the skills of practising opticians to help improve NHS service provision in Scotland. This series of workshops concentrates on communication and practical clinical skills, essentially building on those opticians already possess.'
