Student intake on UK undergraduate optometry degree courses increases

Student intake on UK undergraduate optometry degree courses has increased, an Optician survey has found.

Aston University offered the most places for undergraduate optometrists, with 160 students set to start its BSc course this September, up from 150 last year.

City University optometry saw 118 students enrolled this year from 109, Plymouth University was up to 72 places from 60, Manchester University to 100 from 92 and University of Ulster to 35 from 25 last year.

Glasgow Caledonian University did not provide figures for this academic year as clearing was still taking place but said its optometry BSc intake increased from 63 in 2014 to 73 in 2015. The new MOptom course at University of Portsmouth will run this academic year with 16 students.

Meanwhile ABDO College has enrolled 40 dispensing students this year, compared to 28 in 2015.
