Leading figures from the profession will be presenting a series of lectures and workshops on matters affecting optics at the Optometry Tomorrow conference in March 2007. Taking place at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead hotel, the two-day event will cover both the theory and practical issues of everyday optometry.

This year, Bertil Damato, director of the ocular oncology service at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, will deliver the George Giles Memorial Lecture on prospects for change in the treatment of uveal melanoma. Professors Chris Hammond (pictured) and David Henson will debate whether visual field testing should be performed routinely on all patients aged over 40 and Dr Philip Morgan will be predicting the future for contact lenses.

A number of 'hands on' workshops will also be conducted, focusing on the peripheral retina, orthokeratology and slit-lamp binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. Delegates will also be introduced to the science of optical coherence tomography, with the opportunity to use the system for themselves. Practice management will also be covered with sessions on record keeping and regulatory changes.

Commenting on the conference, Kevin Lewis, president of the College of Optometrists said the 2007 event had been developed based on the feedback delegates had provided about the Bristol event earlier this year. 'We hope the broad range of subjects and high-calibre speakers will appeal to the profession.'

The full conference programme will be available early next week at www.college-optometrists.org
