It said the amount that would be saved, if means testing for eye exams for people aged between 19-59 years old was introduced as proposed by the Independent Budget Review Panel, would be £16m a year. OS said that was a fraction of the figures being quoted in the press, which have been extrapolated out over many years to make them look larger. The Glasgow Herald (News 06.08.10) suggested the cost would be £93m over four years.
