Panel rules on student's registration

An interim conditional registration order made on February 29 in respect of student optometrist Umar Abbas will remain in place until January 19 2009, a fitness to practise panel has ruled.

An interim conditional registration order made on February 29 in respect of student optometrist Umar Abbas will remain in place until January 19 2009, a fitness to practise panel has ruled.

Abbas is alleged to have forged testimonials from four optometrists at Hallam Hospital in Sheffield after losing the original reports.

During last Friday's hearing to review the original order for conditional registration, the panel heard that Abbas had passed his final exams and to that effect was more 'mobile' in terms of seeking or obtaining employment as an optometrist.

The extension of the order was not opposed by the registrant's legal representative.

In its ruling the panel said: 'The order will be further reviewed within six months from today (July 25) unless all matters are resolved within that time, or earlier should new evidence be made available, or if the registrant, at any time after three months from today's date, requests an early review.'
