Contact lenses prescribed for longer replacement intervals can lead to more extreme overwear, leading to undesirable clinical effects, according to research presented at the American Academy of Optometry.
More than half of frequent replacement contact lens wearers surveyed said they were not compliant with their prescribed replacement schedule, whether two-week or monthly lenses.
A random sample of 645 frequent replacement CL wearers answered an online sponsor-masked survey, with 43 per cent on two-week replacement reporting that they replaced their lenses as prescribed 65 per cent replaced them at three weeks, 85 per cent at eight weeks or more and 2 per cent at 10 weeks or more.
