SpaMedica has developed an initiative to provide personalised cataract care to vulnerable patients living with disabilities and dementia.
Healthcare workers, Kerry Harrison and Hannah Young, developed tools to explain the patient journey through alternative mediums, such as picture books and personalised instruction videos.
Nurse Harrison commented: ‘SpaMedica treats thousands of NHS patients for cataract surgery so we were proud to be able to channel our time and resources to implement this kind of personalised programme of care.’
The new scheme has been deployed across its 37 UK hospitals and aimed to set new standards of care at SpaMedica.
‘Although they go through the same procedure, we might have a patient with mobility problems, dementia or a language barrier. Our commitment to treat everyone as an individual is critical. It’s patient-centred care, rather than just ticking a box to get the surgery successfully completed,’ Harrison added.
