Practice boss given community service

Former practice owner Saddiq Ahmed Sarodia was ordered to do 80 hours' unpaid community service earlier this month.

Mr Sarodia had pleaded guilty to charges of false accounting and deception amounting to &\#163;2,750 at Bolton Magistrates Court (News, May 28) after police had seized documents from The Eye Shop in Bolton, Lancashire. Prosecuting, Lauren Strang said that a high number of claims from the Eye Shop - Sarodia's former practice - were revealed when officials from the Wigan and Bolton Area Health Authority carried out a survey of practices in the area. In the documents seized by the police it was shown that in some cases two pairs of spectacles had been claimed for when only one pair had been supplied to patients. She added that the optometrist at the practice was interviewed, but cleared of any involvement in Sarodia's fraud. Defending Michael Garstang said Mr Sarodia had borrowed money to repay the health authority. Mr Sarodia was also ordered to pay &\#163;60 costs.
